Canon EOS 100D

Canon has announced a new, smaller, DSLR camera in its EOS line, the Canon EOS 100D. It is Canon’s smallest and lightest APS-C digital SLR yet, with the company looking to compete with smaller and lighter models from rival interchangeable lens systems.

The Canon EOS 100D positions itself between Canon’s smallest EOS model, the EOS M and looks like it upgrades the Japanese company’s entry-level DLSR, the EOS 1100D, pulling some of the EOS M characteristics into a more conventional DSLR design.


More conventional it might be, but the EOS 100D does carry that badge of being the smallest and lightest camera in its class. Canon isn’t highlighting this by accident, it’s fully aware of the fierce competition from the likes of Sony NEX line, Samsung NX and Panasonic and Olympus’s Micro-Four Thirds systems.

Sitting at the heart of the camera is an 18-megapixel sensor backed by the DIGIC 5 processor. It offers manually selectable sensitivity up to ISO 12,800, with a 25,600 if you really need that picture in low light, and a capture speed of 4fps.


Like the EOS M, the EOS 100D has a 3-inch touchscreen on the back, expanding your control options over those on the body itself. The controls on the body look pretty conventional too, with a top-mounted mode dial giving you quick access to the major shooting modes, and the body buttons letting you access the most pertinent shooting settings.

You’ll get creative functions with a range of filters, an in-camera guide to help budding photographers start, as well as Full HD video capture, all bundled together in a package that will cost you £569.99 (body only) or £699 with EF-S 18-55mm IS STM lens.

Canon has announced two new DSLR models as it tries to stay relevant in a world that is becoming increasingly dominated by compact system cameras.

The new mid-level EOS 700D - the replacement to the EOS 650D - and the brand new entry-level EOS 100D plan to offer consumers the full capabilities of a DSLR in a smaller package; no need to compromise picture quality for space in your camera bag. These latest models are still larger than the current crop of CSC cameras available and still considerably larger than the rather sluggish EOS M launched late last year.

"The EOS 100D offers a range of simple controls and a helpful in-camera feature guide, perfect for those looking to explore the world of DSLR photography for the first time but without the bulk normally associated with a DSLR," claims Canon while the EOS 700D is talked up as "Canon’s most advanced consumer EOS model to date."

Both models include an 18-megapixel sensor, and both come boxed as conplete kit options with the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens - one of the key benefits to sticking with the EOS DSLR format as Canon continues to offer a huge range of EF-S lenses.

The EOS 100D features an APS-C sensor and an optical viewfinder. Those happy with that will get a camera that measures 116.8 x 90.7 x 69.4mm, weighs 407g, and features a 3-inch touchscreen display on the back.

Meanwhile, the EOS 700D comes with slightly better features to justify the its higher price point. It boasts a 5fps burst mode, a wide 9-point all cross-type AF system and vari-angle Clear View II LCD touch screen.

The EOS 700D is available from late April, and will cost £619.99 for the body only and £749.99 if you opt for the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens.

The EOS 100D is due for simultaneous release and is a touch cheaper at £569.99 for the body or £699.99 with the 18-55mm STM lens.

Canon has announced two new PowerShot SX models, the PowerShot SX280 HS and PowerShot SX270 HS, as it hopes to convince those looking for a new camera that it is the brand to help them.

The new models feature the company's brand new DIGIC 6 image processors, a 20x optical zoom and offer Full HD 60p video.

Canon also boasts that the new PowerShot SX280 HS features Wi-Fi and GPS so you can share your photos that you've captured with the models' 12.1-megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and they can all be viewed on a 3-inch screen - useful if you haven't got a larger screen on your phone or tablet.

Trying to stand out from the crowd, the PowerShot SX280 HS and PowerShot SX270 HS feature a new Hybrid Auto mode that records the four seconds before every shot in 720p resolution, before using Smart Auto to determine the best settings to capture the "perfect shot" according to Canon - a trick phone brands like HTC have been offering for some time now.

At the end of each day, the four-second clips are merged into one to tell the “behind-the-scenes” story of the day’s images.

Stills can also be transformed by using one of seven different Creative Filters, including Fish-eye Effect and Miniature Effect among others.

Those not looking for GPS and Wi-Fi can opt for the SX270 HS instead.

The two models will be priced at £299 and £279 respectively and will be on sale in early May.

Canon PowerShot S110 Review

The Canon PowerShot S-series has some of the most advanced compact cameras around. The latest, the PowerShot S110, not only uses a new, better sensor that pushes the ISO up to 12,800, but it has a faster autofocusing system, too. The big feature here is integrated Wi-Fi for the wireless transfer and upload of photos, but are these features – plus the camera’s ability to take great photos – enough to justify the $450 price tag?

Features and design

Since the PowerShot S90, the S-series from Canon has become one of the better high-performance compact point-and-shoot cameras you can buy. Such is the case with the PowerShot S110: With an exterior design that hasn’t changed drastically since S90, the S110’s form factor is small enough to fit easily inside an empty pants pocket yet feels comfortable in the hands (one-hand operation is totally doable). The S110 has a noticeably more-solid construction than, say, Canon’s A-series, but it does have a bit of a heft – you’ll feel it pulling down your shirt’s front pocket, for example.

Don’t confuse this compact cam with all point-and-shoots. While it is easy to operate, there are more advanced components and features. Internally, the S110 shares many of the same specs as the S100, but there are enhancements. The S110 uses a new 0.59-inch (diagonal) 12.1-megapixel “High-Sensitivity” CMOS sensor – the same sensor found in the larger PowerShot G15 – with a max ISO of 12,800 (versus the S100’s 6,400). The autofocusing has also been improved to be faster with reduced lag times (issues that hindered older S-series cameras) and slightly faster burst mode (10 frames per second in the High-Speed Burst HQ mode). The 3-inch LCD (rated at 461K dots) is now touch capable, letting you select, pinch, and slide like you have been trained to do on your smartphones. Otherwise, the S110 offers the same features as the S100: a 5x optical zoom; 24-120mm focal length (35mm equivalent); f/2.0-5.9 aperture, 15-1/2000 of a second shutter speed; and RAW image capture.

The biggest upgrade, however, is the inclusion of Wi-Fi. With it, you can transmit content directly to another Canon Wi-Fi-enabled camera; to a PC or Mac via a network access point; a compatible Wi-Fi-enabled printer; a smart phone or tablet running Canon’s CameraWindow app on Android or iOS; or Canon’s Image Gateway portal (via a network access point), which you can use to send your images straight to a Web service like Twitter and Facebook. Image Gateway requires a one-time setup through your computer, which means you’ll also have to register the camera and create a Canon account (talk about an unnecessarily long process just to tweet an image!). If you have a smartphone, use that as an intermediary to upload your images instead. Also, you can use your smartphone’s GPS to geotag your images with location info; the S110 lacks built-in GPS, which the S100 had.


In terms of usability, the S110 can’t match the ease of an iPhone or one of the many Android devices. It’s terribly hard to set up, and the menu options are a bit convoluted. For example, when we first tried to pair the camera with an iPhone 4S, there was no indication that the setup process had completed, but the status bar continued to indicate that it’s “working.” We decided to cancel out, but after launching the CameraWindow app on the iPhone, the camera showed up; it seems that the pairing was successful. There’s a bit of a long delay before the camera and phone starts talking to each other, but once the camera recognizes the iPhone, we could grab an image or video off the S110 and send it to Facebook, YouTube, or an email address (sorry, folks, no Twitter or any other social networking service via this method). Also, we couldn’t get the geotagging feature to work on our review unit. We had better luck connecting to a network access point via Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) as well as typing in the network’s password (entering passwords is much easier, thanks to the touchscreen).

One useful feature introduced in the S90 is the control ring that surrounds the lens, which the S110 retains. The user can make on-the-fly adjustments to an often-used setting simply by turning it. You can program it to work with only one of several settings, such as exposure compensation (brightness), manual focus, white balance, and zoom. (We think it works best for exposure comp, but that’s just us.)

With the previous S100, Canon added a grip on the front to rest your fingers on. That grip has disappeared with the S110, and the front of the camera once again has a clean look consisting of the lens, control ring, microphone, and autofocusing lamp. The top has a mode dial (for quick access to various shooting modes), zoom lever surrounding the shutter button, an on-off switch, an indicator that lights up blue when Wi-Fi is enabled, and a flash that automatically pops up and down when activated (don’t physically push it down; it’ll retract back into the camera on its own when it’s not needed).

Finally, there’s the issue with the touchscreen. It’s very responsive, and it’s fine for playback, selecting items onscreen, punching in our access point’s password, and picking a focus point. But because it’s so large on this small camera, there’s little room for your left-hand fingers to hold onto the camera properly and steadily without nudging on the screen; this is an issue if the touch-shutter function is enabled, as we always inadvertently touch the screen with our knuckle and shot something we didn’t want (something we encountered with Canon’s EOS M camera). The “getting started” guide instructs us to hold the camera with thumb against the left side of the camera and index finger cradling the bottom, like some kind of “L” shape. Sorry, but it feels unnatural to hold a camera this way.

Trust us, it hurts us to say these things about a camera series we appreciate, but we wish there had been better solutions to these design compromises. Otherwise, the buttons, dials, and touchscreen are easily accessible via the right hand (except that tiny power button).

What’s in the box

Like the camera’s minimalist design, besides the S110, there’s very little that comes in the box. You’ll find the battery (NB-5L, rated at 200 shots), battery charger, USB interface cable, wrist strap, “getting started” booklet, and a CD containing editing software and a full PDF manual.

Performance and use

Despite whatever flaws, at the end of the day this is a seriously great compact camera for shooting still photos. Think of it as a car with a small turbo-charged engine. The improved autofocusing is faster and there’s shorter lag time (although it’ll need to work much harder in low light). Startup time is good, at approximately a second.

In normal shooting conditions, the camera does well on its own in auto or program mode. Image quality is generally excellent, although there are times when we needed to adjust the exposure compensation, even in normal daylight. That’s the beauty of cameras like the S110: Unlike smartphones or the most basic point-and-shoot, it lets you take control and fine-tune the adjustments. The colors in the images we shot were generally warm and accurate.

The S110 will impress you with its low-light performance. Although the camera can be pushed up to a max ISO of 12,800, you should never go that high unless you like a lot of noise – it’s true for most compact cameras of this size. You’ll get nice, clean photos at around ISO 1,600, but you’ll still get usable images at ISO 3,200. At ISO 6,400, use those at small sizes for sharing on the Web or through e-mail.

On the back of the S110, the 3-inch touchscreen takes up three-fourths of the space. To the right of the screen there’s a thumb grip/rest, speaker, ring function selector button, dedicated movie button, playback button, menu button, and a control dial with a four-way and center button for various functions including macro/manual focus (left), flash (right), display (down), exposure compensation/Wi-Fi (up), and function/set (center). The cover on the right opens to reveal the digital and HDMI ports. The bottom has the tripod socket and battery and SD card (up to SDXC) compartment. Despite what seems like a lot of buttons and dials, overall the camera design is minimalist.

Call us nitpicky but there are some design issues we must point out. For some reason, Canon has changed the on/off button into a small recessed thing that isn’t as easy to press as in previous models. We don’t know how tightly packed the components are inside now that Wi-Fi has been added, but surely there’s plenty of space on top for a larger button that’s more substantial, right? Then, there’s the pop-up flash. When it’s down, it’s fine. When it pops up, it leaves little room for your left index finger to steadily hold onto the camera. We try not to use the internal flash when we take photos, but for the times that call for it, this flash placement can be a nuisance. As we mentioned in our S100 review, it’d be nice to include a hot shoe for a small external flash. But doing so would require the camera to be bigger than it is – which would defeat the point of this small camera – so it’s a compromise.

If you’re looking to shoot video, the S110 doesn’t disappoint. As with many new video-capable Canon cameras, the Full HD 1080p (24 fps) video quality is clear and smooth with good autofocusing. Audio quality is decent, but not great. The S110 is fine for capturing a few short videos of your family vacation, but it’s not designed for shooting a motion picture, obviously.

Where the camera stumbles is in shooting fast action shots. While Canon touts a burst mode of 10 frames per second, that’s in the High-Speed Burst HQ mode (found in the scene mode). Otherwise, the camera can only handle 2.1 fps. As long as you stick to portraits, still life, or slow motion, you should be OK.

Battery life is good. We were able to get a weekend of casual shooting (roughly 138 photos) and occasional video without having to recharge (we made sure to power down when walking around, and we never used Wi-Fi). The small battery will be limiting if you put the camera through an intense workout.

As you can probably tell from our earlier description of the camera’s Wi-Fi capability, it feels like it’s still in beta and needs polishing. You can transfer files wirelessly to a computer, but it’s way faster to just plug the SD card into a computer. You also need to connect to an access point for many instances, and even then you are limited in where you can upload your images. We wish the CameraWindow app could do more, such as some quick editing and posting to more social networking sites; we would also like Canon to follow Sony’s example and use smart phone as a viewfinder for remote shooting. With the S110, Wi-Fi feels more like a novelty than a real useful feature. It requires you to do so much in order to get it to work, yet you get very little reward out of it.
Conclusion

It’s a given that you’ll get better performance from a camera with a larger sensor, but more convenience out of a smart phone. So, where does the S110 fit in? It fills that niche where you want excellent image quality but you don’t want to lug around an interchangeable lens camera, no matter how compact some mirrorless ones are. The S110 is an amazing little camera that thinks it’s a more powerful shooter, and it backs it up with its picture and video quality. Plus, it’s easy to stow; we stashed it in our back pocket without feeling overburden, yet it was easy to take out when it came time to shoot.

If you want a great camera that takes great photos – even in most low-light situations – put the S110 on your list. With that said, realize there are issues. The Wi-Fi, for us, is half-baked; we almost wish it wasn’t there. While camera companies are compelled to add some form of connectivity to their products, the Wi-Fi features in the S110 seem like more trouble that it’s worth. What it needs is simpler, no-brainer setup and instant sharing capabilities to a variety of sites, plus more features out of the CameraWindow app.

Whether you care about having the Wi-Fi or not, the S110 will not let you down when it comes to image quality. Following the successes of the S95 and S100, the S110 continues to be Canon’s most excellent pocket cam. If you don’t need Wi-Fi, consider the S100, which is still on the market and you may be able to find it for less than the $430 list price. But, buy this camera for its prowess in photo taking, not because it has Wi-Fi.

Canon EOS C300/C300PL (for Cinema) review

Canon EOS C300/C300PL (for Cinema) review


Canon has announced a new "C" (for Cinema) series of EOS cameras made specifically for digital motion picture production.  The Canon EOS C300 features a brand new super 35mm equivalent 8.29-megapixel CMOS sensor capable of capturing "4K" imagery (made up of 1920 x 1080 pixels for all 3 colors -- RGB).  While the camera is not capable of full 4:4:4 color sampling, it manages a 4:2:2 @ 50 Mbps (as a reference, very good Blu-ray discs playback at 30-40 Mbps).  In terms of variable frame rates, the C300 will shoot anywhere between 1 and 60 frames per second, but can only shoot 60 fps at a 720p resolution, which is a letdown as many consumer-level dSLRs already do this.  [FYI: 24 fps is the standard frame rate for feature films and playback in local cinemas; if you shoot faster than 24 fps, during playback the footage will appear "faster", and if you shoot slower than 24 fps, you get slow motion.]

The compact camera body is dust and drip proof, and also features a built-in cooling system. It will be available in two model types C300, and the C300PL.  The C300 is designed to work with all Canon EF lenses (that's over 60 lenses), including 4 brand new Cinema series prime and zoom lenses.  When using EF lenses, the C300 utilizes Peripher Illumination Correction -- meaning, it figures out which specific lens your are using an automatically corrects for vignetting while allowing for camera iris control. The C300PL is compatible with all industry-standard PL lenses.

The new EOS Cinema brand is Canon's attempt to compete with other professional digital cinema cameras from Sony, Panasonic, Arri and, of course, RED.  During its debut an announcement, Canon boasted the C300's ability to shoot film-like imagery without needing tons of extra light; in most cases, natural light should do.  However, to my critical eye, the C300 has a long way to go before it is both film-like, and like many digital cameras, needs bright light sources to avoid suffering from digital noise.  We'll keep our eyes open to see how this and future Cinema EOS cameras develop.

Design & Usability

Nothing really stands out about this design, unless you’ve never seen a PowerShot before.

Anyone who’s ever laid eyes on a Canon PowerShot will recognize the familiar sleek red (or silver) design. Since this layout has been refined over many generations into a paragon of efficient user-friendliness, our design complaints are rather limited. We did notice, however, that the controls seemed a bit mashed together. You might chalk it up to our sausage fingers, but we found it easy to hit the wrong button on four-way command cluster. The 8x zoom mechanism also seemed a touch slow, but not slow enough to cause real headaches.

The biggest thing the 130 IS has going for it is its compact size. It’s ideal for folks who are looking for something that’ll fit in the pocket and can be easily removed for quick shots with friends at the bar. However, with the increasing photographic power of smartphones, the space for cameras likes the 130 IS—both physically and economically—is rapidly dwindling.

Features


Standing out is the 16 MP CCD sensor and the ISO range of 100 to 6400. WiFi and video capabilities are a bonus, although these features are increasingly common and thus expected among point-and-shoots. The lens’s max aperture is a bit of a snooze at f/3.2, but the 8x optical zoom is nice in a camera this compact. None of these features is truly disappointing, but there’s also nothing that really amazed us.

The social and WiFi capabilities are worth mentioning, if only because they handily illustrate how hard camera manufacturers are working to compete with the ever-growing smartphone camera market. Android and iOS users can download Canon’s proprietary CameraWindow software, allowing them to wirelessly transfer photos and videos from the ELPH 130 IS to their various mobile devices.

Conclusion

Middle-of-the-road in every sense, the ELPH 130 IS won’t amaze you, but it’ll get the job done—for the time being. Given the increasing competition in this market space, something better will inevitably come down the line soon.

Canon’s newest PowerShot ELPH is nothing shocking, but it serves as a solid contribution to the market for mid-range, compact point-and-shoots—at least for now. If you’re looking to invest in a high-quality, easy-to-use point-and-shoot that will last you for years to come, we recommend looking a little bit upmarket. Smartphone cameras are getting better with every generation, and they’ll likely surpass this market within the next five years.

However, if you’re aware of the future of this space and simply want a decently priced compact, wait a few months for the ELPH 130 IS’s price to come down (from the MSRP of $199), and we think you’ll be happy with it for at least a couple years.

Though Canon makes many excellent digital SLR cameras for pros and consumers, none has reached the superstar status of the Canon 5D series. The original 5D's 12.8-megapixel full-frame sensor produced legendary image quality, and the 5D Mark II raised the resolution to 21.1 megapixels and added superb video quality to the mix, creating a sensation in video production. The Canon 5D Mark III raises the game in terms of overall camera performance, from frame rate to autofocus, while increasing the resolution only slightly (by just over a million pixels to 22.3-megapixels). Of all the additional features, probably the most important is the new autofocus system, brought over from the 1D X, which in addition to having more points (61) and more cross-type points (41), covers considerably more of the Canon 5D III's image area, while the AF system of the past two models were brought over from the company's APS-C cameras, thus covering much less image area in the viewfinder.

Other additions include a DIGIC 5+ processor, which is said to be 17 times more powerful than the DIGIC 4 processor in the 5D II. The 7D's 63-zone dual-layer metering system reappears in the Canon 5D Mark III, instead of the 1D X's 100,000-pixel RGB sensor. We'll go over the other features in more detail below, but the Canon 5D Mark III also includes a 150,000-cycle shutter rating; a new HDR mode; Full HD, 1080p video at 24, 25, and 30 frames per second; a 3.2-inch, 1.04M-dot LCD; a new CMOS sensor with higher sensitivity and an eight-channel readout that allows a 6-frame-per-second frame rate; a Quick Control dial that includes touch capability for silent adjustments while in video mode; multiple raw image sizes; 100-percent viewfinder coverage with an adjustable LCD grid and AF overlay; a 1.5 percent spot meter; a dual-axis leveling system; and Standard or Quiet operation modes.

The size and shape of the Canon 5D Mark III is similar to the Mark II, only a little heavier. The grip is sized right for the camera body, though somewhat large for small hands; it fit my medium-sized hands comfortably. Canon specs the body weight at 30.3 ounces (860g) body only. That's 1.7 ounces (50g) heavier than the 5D Mark II. Dimensions are 6.0 x 4.6 x 3.0 inches (152.0 x 116.4 x 76.4mm). Only height and thickness have increased a millimeter or so.


Two minor elements are moved on the front of the Canon 5D Mark III: the Infrared port is now on the grip (where you'll find it on most every other Canon digital SLR with the feature), and the Depth-of-field preview button has moved to the grip-side of the body. The Self-timer lamp moves up to its usual position, and the monaural microphone moves from below to above the EOS 5D logo.


The top deck includes a Mode dial with the Auto+ mode, combined from the Creative Auto and Green Zone modes on the 5D Mark II. The 5D Mark III's power switch juts out from beneath this dial, as it does from the Canon 7D as well. Also from the 7D is the Multi-Function button behind the Shutter button. Canon has remapped the Status LCD.


The control cluster on the back of the Canon 5D Mark III resembles the 7D more than the 5D Mark II. Even so, keeping with Canon tradition, many buttons have shuffled around, and new ones appeared. Menu and Info buttons are well-placed on the upper left side of the LCD. Five buttons left of the LCD are Creative Style, a new Rate button, a Zoom button, and finally the Playback and Delete buttons. Rather than silkscreen the logo next to the button, Canon's eliminated the doubt and put the logo right on these buttons.

Lower left of the LCD are three holes for the speaker, and a small window for the ambient light sensor, used to automatically adjust the LCD backlight.

Right of the LCD the controls are nearly all 7D, except for the new, more logical position of the Quick menu button, just upper left of the Quick Control dial. The Movie Record/Live View control includes a switch to select between modes, and a button to either start and stop Movie recording or to start and stop Live View mode. The Quick Control dial turns with its normal coarse click stops, but in Movie mode it also responds to touch for making silent adjustments whose noise won't appear in the audio track.

The LCD itself is a 3:2 aspect ratio design that's just as gorgeous as recent models have been, with a 1.04-million dot array.

The thumbgrip on the right is a little better than on the 5D Mark II, with a more comfortable taper down the length of the back, rather than a simple arc that didn't match the contours of the thumb.

Ergonomics
There are quite a few improvements, and we'll take them a few at a time. First, I appreciated how the Canon 5D Mark III felt more solid. The 5D Mark III's grip also fit more nicely in my hands; my fingers wrapped around the grip more comfortably. My thumb rested on a more pronounced protrusion than on the 5D Mark II and was more comfortable to hold for long periods. On the 5D Mark II, with a heavy lens such as the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L or the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, my thumb would start to turn red from the friction of the grip after several hours of shooting; that didn't happen with the 5D Mark III. This improvement alone illustrates the improvements in handling comfort that Canon has made. I absolutely loved how much more comfortable it felt in my hands. The entire camera is more rounded on all corners than its predecessor, and the battery and memory card bays are now spring-loaded for those of us looking to save a second or two when we have to swap memory cards or batteries. Its improved weather sealing is also a plus.

Canon made a few changes to the button layout from the Mark II to the Mark III. First, the power button moved to the mode dial, similar to its placement on the Canon 7D. While I prefer turning on my camera with my shooting hand, I generally leave it on (it doesn't drain the battery much unless its in Live View mode) and can understand Canon's move to separate the now-programmable main dial lock from the power switch. The Mode dial now has a lock to prevent accidental mode switching, something that would sometimes happen to my 5D Mark II when moving around during a wedding day, or when placing my camera in a backpack or roller for transportation. There is also a new magnification button for zooming on image playback, one that appears in a new location, a feature I'll touch upon in more detail below.

Menu System

 The menu system is displayed beautifully on a gorgeous 3.2-inch LCD. While similar to the 5D Mark II and the 7D, the menus are divided into color-coded subgroups. For a photographer who doesn't have time to read all the menu options, being able to navigate quickly to the right setting is critical. Due to the improved autofocus system, Canon has dedicated an entire group of menus to customizing the autofocus features. All of the Custom functions are now displayed individually, rather than hidden in subgroups as before. Canon also includes basic information on nearly all of the items displayed in the menus, accessed by pushing the Info button, conveniently located next to the Menu button. While I spent some time with the instruction manual, the in-camera information often provided sufficient explanation on what each setting controlled for on-the-go customization.

My biggest gripe about the menu system is that there is still just one user-defined Custom menu page, restricting you to six items in the Custom menu. I populated mine with items such as LCD brightness (set to turn brighter when showing photos to clients under bright sunlight, and lower to conserve battery or to save your eyes in low light), Highlight alert (useful for the photographer, sometimes confusing for clients), Beep (useful in portraits, annoying at events), Custom white balance, Battery info and Card format.

While it's only 0.2 inches larger (3.2 versus 3.0-inches on the 5D Mark II), the LCD display on the 5D Mark III seems much larger, thanks to its 3:2 aspect ratio, which matches that of the camera's native image aspect ratio. Compared to the screen on the 5D II, photos completely fill the screen, so the effect is that of a significantly larger screen at the old aspect ratio.

Overall, putting their best current technology in a smaller body the makes Canon 5D Mark III less expensive to manufacture and distribute and its comparatively lower price will appeal to more customers (Compared to the 1D series, that is). That has to be an idea that appealed to Canon's bean counters as well.

The 5D Mark III's 22.3 megapixel, full-frame CMOS image sensor has a pixel pitch of 6.25 microns. Although resolution is almost unchanged, it now features eight-channel readout, gapless microlenses, and boasts improvements in transistor structure and on-chip noise reduction that should yield improved image quality, even for raw shooters. Two reduced-resolution raw modes are also available, providing 10.5 or 5.5 megapixel resolution. Sensitivity ordinarily ranges from ISO 100 to 25,600 equivalents, and can be expanded to encompass ISO 50 to 102,400 equivalents. For video mode, the upper limit is capped at ISO 25,600 equivalent.  Canon's DIGIC 5+ processor first appeared in the 1D X. Although the 5D Mark III uses only a single processor, Canon says it's 17 times more powerful than the Mark II's DIGIC 4 chip. As well as enabling faster 6 fps burst shooting, there's also more power for noise reduction, and Canon is predicting a two-stop improvement for JPEG shooting. The greater performance is also used to add real-time chromatic aberration correction for both still and movie shooting. 
  


The Mark III's 61-point autofocus sensor is also borrowed from the EOS 1D X. As in that camera, there are 41 cross-type points, of which 20 work to f/4.0, and 21 are f/5.6 capable. Of the latter, five will work as high-precision points to f/2.8. The remaining points are horizontal line-types, sensitive to f/5.6. Also new since the 5D Mark II is Canon's AI Servo III, which is quicker to start tracking your subject, and should handle momentary obstructions between camera and subject more gracefully.  The 5D Mark III's 63-zone dual-layer iFCL metering sensor was first seen in the EOS 7D. The top layer is sensitive to red and green, while the bottom layer detects blue and green. This full-color metering allows better subject detection, information which is also fed back to the autofocus system to further aid subject tracking. As well as evaluative, partial, and center-weighted, there's also a tighter 1.5% spot metering mode.  


Like its predecessor, the 5D Mark III has a Canon EF lens mount, and doesn't accept sub-frame EF-S lenses. Thanks to its full-frame sensor, there's no focal length crop.The shutter mechanism is rated as good for 150,000 shots, unchanged from the 5D Mark II. A 'Silent' shooting mode reduces operation noise, but reduces burst-shooting speed to three frames per second.


The 5D Mark III's viewfinder now has 100% coverage, slightly upgraded from 98% in the previous model. As in the EOS 7D, there's an on-demand grid function, and you can also display the locations of the 61 focusing points.
Like the 1D X, there's a 3.2-inch Clear View II LCD panel with a high resolution of approximately 1,040,000 dots.


Of course, there's still a monochrome status display on the top deck, as well.The EOS 5D Mark III's video functionality is similar to that of the 1D X, but with an important addition: a headphone jack for audio monitoring, useful given the ability to adjust audio levels during recording. (You can also adjust ISO sensitivity, shutter speed, and aperture as the video is captured.)


As well as 1080p 24/25/30 fps and VGA 25/30 fps, there's now a 720p 50/60 fps mode. The 4GB recording limit is gone, and you can save clips as long as 29 minutes, 59 seconds in all resolutions. Compression choices are ALL-I intraframe or IPB interframe, with embedded free-run or rec-run timecode. Canon says that video moire has been greatly reduced since the 5D Mark II.As well as the previously-mentioned microphone and headphone jacks, the 5D Mark III also offers up a PC sync terminal, combined standard-def AV output / USB 2.0 High Speed port, wired remote control port, and high-def HDMI video output.


Dual card slots mean that the 5D Mark III can now record to either UDMA 7 CompactFlash or Secure Digital cards, including SDHC and SDXC. Interestingly, as well as using the secondary card as an overflow or duplicate, or to segregate by file type, you can also record different raw or JPEG types to each card. For example, you could save full-res raw files on one card, and reduced-res raw files on the other.The 5D Mark III takes the same LP-E6 battery pack as the 5D Mark II, letting you save a little money if you're planning on upgrading from the older model, but have a stack of batteries on hand. Battery life is rated to CIPA testing standards at 950 shots with the viewfinder, or 200 shots in live view mode, at 73°F / 23°C. This can be approximately doubled by shooting with two packs, using the BG-E11 battery grip.
  


Although the target market is clearly experienced photographers, the 5D Mark III caters to the occasional time when you want to lend your camera to a less-experienced photographer, perhaps to get in the shot yourself. The Full Auto mode has been upgraded, and Canon says it will now do a better job of recognizing the appropriate scene type.The Mode dial has a central locking button, as seen on the 60D. (This was also available as an option on the 7D and 5D Mark II, but here it's the default.)


A new Rate button to the left of the LCD provides instant access to image rating functionality, letting you assign anywhere from one to five stars for each image. The 5D Mark III also adopts Canon's Q button, just to the right of the LCD, for quick-control functions.On the top deck, you can now assign the Multi-Function button to instantly switch between raw and JPEG shooting with a single press.

The EOS 5D Mark III's body includes weather-sealing to a level said to be better than that of the 5D Mark II, but not to the same degree as an EOS 1-series body like the EOS-1D X.

There are quite a few significant changes to the 5D Mark III's firmware, as well. For the first time in an EOS model other than the 1-series, the 5D Mark III can now capture 2, 3, 5, or 7 shots in a bracketed sequence. This will be particularly useful to fans of HDR photography, and if you don't want to deal with processing HDR images yourself, there's also an in-camera three-shot HDR mode, a first for an EOS model. Four different processing effects are available. You can also opt to have the source images saved along with the HDR shot, so if you're not satisfied with the result achieved in-camera, you can reprocess the HDR on your computer.

The 5D Mark III also offers up a multiple exposure function. Just like the 1D X, you can combine up to nine frames into a single exposure in-camera. There's also a dual-axis level display, similar to that of the EOS 7D.

In Playback mode, you can now process raw images in-camera, and take advantage of the lens correction functions when doing so. Among the user requests that Canon has heard and answered with the 5D Mark III, there's now a side-by-side comparative playback display (including synced magnification and a histogram function), plus the ability to manually set the first four characters of image file names.



Alongside the 5D Mark III, Canon has launched a new flagship flash strobe. The Speedlite 600EX-RT allows not only the line-of-sight optical wireless functionality of existing units, but also a new two-way radio connectivity, with 30 meters / 98.4 feet range. Remote camera triggering is possible from a flash strobe. 15 radio channels are available (plus auto), and up to 15 Speedlite flashes can be used on a channel, in as many as five groups, with each group separately able to be set to E-TTL or controlled manually. A 4-digit wireless radio ID can be assigned to separate radio networks.The 600EX-RT has a guide number of 60 meters / 197 feet at maximum zoom, and has a zoom range of 20 to 200mm. It also has a more rugged shoe mount, and ships with a gel filter holder and tungsten / fluorescent filters.


There's also a new ST-E3-RT transmitter, similar to the existing ST-E2, but with support for the new two-way radio system.
The 5D Mark III uses a new BG-E11 battery grip, which includes a duplicate multi-controller for portrait shooting.


There's a new WFT-E7A wireless file transmitter that also supports the EOS 7D and 60D, and includes 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and gigabit Ethernet.An external GP-E2 GPS receiver connects to the camera via USB, and mounts on the hotshoe or off-camera. As well as recording latitude, longitude, altitude, and UTC time in the EXIF header of images, it has a compass function, and can capture GPS track logs.
