Review Fujifilm X10 > new stylish camera

Fujifilm X10 review
Fujifilm X10 has a fixed lens and uses a 2/3in sensor – marginally bigger than the Canon S100's but much smaller than the sensors in most CSCs. The camera itself is fairly bulky, though, and much closer in size to a CSC than the S100. Is this the worst of both worlds?

Our scepticism disappeared once we had the X10 in our hands. This is a seriously beautiful camera. Its leather-effect texture over a magnesium alloy body and variety of buttons and dials give it an air of retro style that seems to be a natural by-product of its superbly thought-out ergonomics.


Optical viewfinders are rare on compact cameras, and the few examples tend to give an extremely small view. This one is much better, being a little bigger than the viewfinders on consumer SLRs. It zooms in tandem with the lens, and although the view is blurred towards the edges, it still shows much more detail than the 2.8in LCD screen. It's disappointing that the screen isn't articulated, especially as it looks like it might be with its slightly raised profile, but it's bright and reasonably sharp.


There's a pop-up flash and a hotshoe for an external flashgun. There are only two flashguns designed specifically for Fujifilm cameras, but we were able to use our generic flashgun on manual exposure settings. For some reason our wireless trigger system wouldn't work, though. There are similar reports on web forums of problems with PocketWizard triggers.

All those dials and single-function buttons make it quick to adjust settings. There's a mode dial, plus another for exposure compensation that falls neatly under the thumb. A command dial sits just below, and the navigation pad doubles as a wheel. This wheel and the command dial control the shutter speed and aperture in manual exposure mode, but they duplicate each other's function in priority modes. It's surprising there's no direct access to ISO speed, but a Fn button beside the shutter release can be assigned to this role. Various other buttons are labelled for quick access to all the key controls, from drive mode to focus point, so there's rarely any need to visit the menu. Our only gripe is that some options can't be selected at the same time, such as super-macro and flash, or continuous mode and dynamic range boost, and it's not obvious why options are sometimes greyed out or buttons don't respond.

The 4x zoom function is controlled via the lens ring, which also acts as a power switch, powering up when the lens is extended and down when it's retracted. It's a smart idea but it's slightly diminished by a three-second wait before shooting can commence. When we pressed the shutter button too early, the camera did nothing rather than shooting as soon as it was ready. Another performance-related issue is one we've seen many times before on Fujifilm cameras: while it's possible to take photos in quick succession – a shade under one second in this case – it's not possible to adjust settings while data is being saved to the memory card.

On the upside, data is saved pretty quickly. After taking a photo, controls started responding again after two seconds for JPEGs and three seconds for raw. Continuous JPEG shooting is at 6fps, slowing to a still-respectable 2fps after seven frames. In 6-megapixel mode (see below), it ran at 7fps for 18 shots before slowing to 3.8fps. This is much faster than the Canon S100, but there's no option to shoot in continuous mode with updating autofocus between shots. Even in single drive mode with the switch on the front of the camera set to AF-C (autofocus continuous), focus updated while composing shots but locked once the shutter button was half pressed.


The 1080p videos were clean and sharp, and displayed remarkably little noise in low light. There appears to be no anti-aliasing filter applied, though, so details looked pixelated, especially on diagonal lines. The stereo soundtrack was crisp and clear, and the autofocus motor didn't impact on it too heavily. However, there were rhythmic bursts of electrical interference on the soundtrack. Switching from a Panasonic UHS-1 to a Sandisk Extreme III SDHC card solved the problem.

Our image quality tests gave much less cause for concern. The lens performed exceptionally well, with impeccably sharp details and no hint of chromatic aberrations right into the corners of frames. Automatic exposures were expertly judged, and when help was needed, the exposure compensation dial made adjustments easy.

Photos taken in bright light at ISO 100 were smooth, sharp and natural-looking, in a way that we normally only see from CSCs and SLRs. We achieved similar results indoors by using a flashgun and bouncing light off the ceiling. It performed exceptionally well indoors using ambient light too, narrowly surpassing the Canon S100 to produce the lowest noise we've ever seen from a sensor of this size. Meanwhile, the wide-aperture lens, at f/2 for wide angle and f/2.8 at the telephoto end, gives a 1 2/3-stop advantage over CSCs' kit lenses, so it's not unreasonable to compare CSCs' output at ISO 6400 with the X10 at ISO 2000. On that basis, it surpassed most CSCs for noise, with only the Sony NEX range for company. CSC users can swap their kit zoom lenses for wide-aperture primes, but that pushes up their prices and in most cases you lose the optical stabilisation. It's swings and roundabouts, then, but the bottom line is that, if £400 is your budget, the X10 is up there with the very best CSCs for image quality.

Noise was even lower when the camera is switched to 6-megapixel output, and the innovative pixel array of the EXR sensor makes this much more effective than lowering the resolution on other cameras. There's also a 6-megapixel mode that expands the dynamic range, rescuing clipped highlights without the usual compromises in noise levels. We've long been fans of Fujifilm's EXR sensors, and the technology is working as well as ever here. There are various reports online of odd disc-shaped blobs around clipped highlights on the X10, but we had to work hard to reveal this problem in our tests. In normal use it was never an issue.

Some CSCs offer the best of both worlds, with superb hands-on controls, interchangeable lenses and SLR-level image quality, but the Panasonic GX1 is the most affordable example and it costs £700. Compared to CSCs at around £400 – the Sony NEX-C3, Nikon J1, Panasonic GF3 and Olympus E-PM1 – the X10 is in the same league for image quality and performance, and beats them all for ergonomics and manual control. The only areas where it can't compete is for video capture and its inability to swap lenses. Then again, having a single lens that's both wide-aperture and has a zoom function is something no CSC lens can match.

It was a bold move to launch a fixed-lens, small-sensor camera that's as bulky and expensive as many CSCs, but Fujifilm has pulled it off with aplomb.

Like its predecessor,  the Nikon D7100 is designed for the top end of the consumer market. Its 24.1 megapixel APS-C sensor has been developed specifically for the D7100, and is joined by an Expeed 3 image processor - the same image process found on the company's top-end professional-grade DSLR cameras. Also borrowed from models above its level is a 51-point auto-focus system capable of operating at exposure levels as low as -2EV.

Externally, the camera has a magnesium alloy body with weatherproofing - something its cheaper sibling lacks - while retaining the dual-SD card slot feature of its predecessor, which allows images to be split between the two cards including saving compressed JPEGs to one card while simultaneously writing higher-quality raw image files to the other.

The rear-facing LCD screen has received a slight upgrade to 3.2in with a new four-element red, green, blue and white Pentile-like display system for improved brightness - something that should make the rear display more usable in outdoor shooting.

Interestingly, Nikon has chosen to remove an internal low-pass filter present in the D7000 - a move which should help to make images sharper, but which runs the risk of capturing interference patterns when shooting finely-textured details. Finally, a new lock system prevents the mode from being accidentally changed during shooting and a freshly-textured mode dial makes it easier to select a mode in the first place.

The Nikon D7100 is due to go on sale next month, priced at £1,099.99 as a body-only camera or £1,299.99 with the same 18-105mm kit lens as its predecessor. All existing accessories, including the Nikon WR-1 wireless remote, will be compatible with the D7100.

The SZ9 could never be accused of being chunky, measuring 21mm thick. Panasonic has somehow squeezed a 10x zoom lens into that tiny space, giving a versatile 25-250mm effective focal length range. We shouldn't sound too surprised, though – it's the same design as last year's Panasonic Lumix DMC-SZ7.

The SZ9 adds Wi-Fi to the mix. The accompanying Android app can control the camera remotely, complete with a live view feed and extensive control including exposure compensation, focus and flash settings. It's even possible to move the autofocus point by touching the screen – something that's impossible on the camera itself. Photos are saved to both the camera and the phone. The app can also browse photos stored on the camera and transfer them on demand. This works for videos too, but only if they've been recorded in MP4 format and not AVCHD. There's no iOS app, and Panasonic couldn't say if or when there would be one.


The SZ9 can also take photos with the camera's normal controls and automatically transfer them to the app as soon as they're captured. This is strangely absent from most Wi-Fi cameras, and is perfect for instant online sharing. The Android app happily ran in the background, copying photos for us to browse and share from the phone's Gallery app. Battery life may be an issue, though. Even with Wi-Fi disabled, it's rated at a meagre 220 shots.


Other destinations for on-demand and instant transfers include the Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Picasa, Flickr and temporary cloud storage. However, we weren't able to sign up to the Lumix Club service and configure these options. Instant transfers to a PC worked superbly, though. We expected to have to install a utility on the PC, but after joining our home Wi-Fi network and entering our Windows user name and password, we could simply select a shared folder and start copying. We were even able to send photos straight to a NAS. With so many Wi-Fi options it could be easy to get lost, but there are useful Connection History and Favourites lists to keep on top of things.

The other notable change compared to the SZ7 is the move from a 14- to a 16-megapixel sensor. This is a daft resolution for a small 1/2.3in sensor; as a result, noise was visible throughout our test shots. Brightly lit shots looked great when resized to fit a computer screen, but viewed up close, skin tones were a little grainy, subtle textures were glossed over and darker textures were replaced by a gloopy haze.

Low-light shots were inevitably much worse, with a syrupy mush of colour making details look vague even when resized to fit a screen. The Intelligent Auto mode took it upon itself to drop the resolution to 7 megapixels in some low-light shots, but to little avail.

We're none too impressed by Intelligent Auto mode's insistence on including digital zoom to extend the 10x optical zoom range to 20x. Details were already pretty vague without it, and with it they looked downright ugly. Intelligent Auto also includes an automatic HDR mode, taking two exposures and blending them to capture more highlight and shadow detail. However, shadows looked even messier, and with occasional weird double-exposure problems and eight seconds to process each shot, it's more trouble that it was worth. At least it can be disabled in the menu.

Otherwise, performance was excellent, taking less than two seconds to switch on and shoot, and 0.8 seconds between subsequent shots. Continuous shooting was at 5fps, although it slowed to 0.9fps after just three frames. The SZ7 was better here. The ability to refocus between shots in continuous mode is a rare treat at this price.

Videos were excellent too, with sharp details, flattering colours, smooth autofocus and effective stabilisation at the long end of the zoom. The AVCHD modes are odd, though, with both the 1080-50i and 720-50p encoding taken from a 25p source, so neither actually contains 50fps video. The MP4 modes are more accurately labelled.

We love the idea of a 10x zoom and sophisticated Wi-Fi functions in a slim metal camera for under £200. The SZ9's appeal is diminished by its sensor, though. Zoom function aside, image quality isn't much better than the best smartphones. With lots of other similarly specified cameras on the horizon, we'd be tempted to wait to see if any can deliver better image quality.

Canon EOS M Review - A Smart Design

Canon EOS M introduces a new lens mount called EF-M, and uses the same 18-megapixel sensor as the Canon EOS 650D. There are currently two EF-M lenses available. The 18-55mm 3x zoom is typical fare for a kit lens. There's also a 22mm f/2 pancake, which is what we were sent for review. This gives a 35mm equivalent focal length, which is perfect for general snapping. The f/2 aperture allows for some flattering shallow depth-of-field effects for nearby subjects, and gathers plenty of light for low-light shooting. It doesn't include optical stabilisation, though.


The camera's design is extremely luxurious, decked out in matt black magnesium alloy and nicely shaped to fit in one hand. Even so, it felt fairly vulnerable when we took photos over the side of a bridge on a cold, windy day. The Sony NEX-5R is much easier to hold onto with its proper handgrip. The EOS M's slim design also means a small battery, which lasts for just 230 shots.


It's primarily aimed at point-and-shoot photographers, with a single rotary control on the back, fewer buttons than on most cheap compacts and a mode switch with just three settings for automatic shooting, scene modes and video. The inclusion of an accessory shoe on top is the main clue that this camera is designed for more demanding users too. There's no integrated flash, but Canon has launched a diminutive flashgun, the Speedlite 90EX, to complement the EOS M. Although it wasn't supplied for review, we've been assured that it comes as standard in both the 18-55mm and 22mm kits. It has a guide number of 9m, which is a little stronger than most integrated flashes. It looks pretty bulky in photos, though, and runs off AAA batteries. An integrated flash would have been more sensible for point-and-shoot operation.

The scarcity of buttons and dials is amply compensated by a superb touchscreen interface. In most shooting modes there's very little to adjust, but program, priority and manual exposure modes are nestling in among the scene presets. Selecting them unlocks all the usual functions. The most important ones are presented in a quick-access menu, but custom white balance is conspicuously absent here. It requires a photo to be captured to memory card first, followed by a trip to the main menu to calibrate from that photo. Various focus options appear in the Q Menu but manual focus is only available via the main menu.

The menus and touchscreen controls are almost identical to the 650D's, and with the same sensor, the EOS M gives a strong impression of being the guts of a 650D crammed into a smaller body. Sadly, this impression extends to the autofocus performance. The sensor includes phase-detect autofocus points to assist the contrast-detect autofocus system, but as with the 650D's live view mode, it doesn't give a huge benefit. Focusing was worryingly slow in our tests, taking 1.7 seconds on average between pressing the shutter button and taking a photo. In household artificial lighting this increased to 2.9 seconds, sometimes taking over five seconds to focus. Even in the most favourable conditions, the fastest we measured was 1.1 seconds.

This made it virtually impossible to photograph fast-paced action. Slower-moving subjects such as candid portraits were tricky too, with the subject often wandering out of focus or even out of the frame before the picture was taken. Shot-to-shot times were slow in manual focus mode at 1.4 seconds, but 2.7 seconds between shots with autofocus is really disappointing for such an expensive camera. Most other Compact system cameras (CSCs) can focus and shoot every second or faster, making it easy to fire off a string of shots and choose the best later.

The EOS M saved a bit of face in continuous mode, delivering 4fps shooting until the card was full. This was with fixed focus and exposure settings, though. Enabling continuous autofocus slashed performance to 1.2fps. This still wasn't slow enough to give the camera enough time to focus properly. When we moved to a further or nearer subject in the middle of a burst of shots, it typically took about 10 frames before the camera successfully focused on the new subject.

IMAGE QUALITY

Image quality is in line with the 650D too, and that gives absolutely no cause for concern. Whereas most Compact system cameras (CSCs) use slightly – or significantly – smaller sensors than those found in SLRs, the fact that the EOS M uses the same APS-C sensor size really pays off. Details in its 18-megapixel JPEGs were extremely sharp, picking out lots of fine texture. Digital correction for chromatic aberrations and vignetting is built in, and although we still spotted a little chromatic aberration at times, focus was generally excellent into the corners of frames.

VIDEO

Its video clips were crisp and vibrant, with barely any noise in low light. There's a choice of 24, 25 or 30fps shooting at 1080p, plus 50 or 60fps at 720p. High-bit-rate AVC encoding minimises compression artefacts, and it can span multiple 4GB files to record for up to 30 minutes per clip. Full manual exposure control is available, with settings adjusted via the touchscreen to avoid button clicks permeating the soundtrack. It's also possible to move the autofocus point on the touchscreen while recording. The camera's small size and low weight and the lack of optical stabilisation in the pancake lens meant that handheld shots were quite shaky, especially when prodding the screen.

Video autofocus was smooth but it was often slow to keep up with the action. The autofocus motor was only just detectable on the soundtrack in quiet scenes, but the microphone position meant that we often accidentally covered it with a finger. The camera boosted the volume to compensate, which made the whirrs from the focus motor much louder.

CONCLUSION

The most surprising thing about the EOS M is that there aren't really any surprises. Image and video quality are exactly what we'd expect from an EOS-branded camera, but autofocus speed is a big concern, just as it is on the Canon G1 X and in live view mode on the 650D. There's a notable lack of extras, too – no optional viewfinder, GPS or Wi-Fi. We wouldn't expect Canon to launch a dozen EF-M lenses all at once, but having just two currently available doesn't compare well with rival CSCs.

It's not cheap, either. It has already been discounted from its initial launch price, but £530 for the 18-55mm kit or £600 for the 22mm lens and EF adapter kit is more than current prices for the Sony NEX-5R or Panasonic GX1.

We hope that Canon can resolve the slow autofocus in the next generation, as in most other respects the EOS M shows a huge amount of promise. As it stands, it's not sufficiently better than its rivals in any particular area to make us want to overlook its performance issues.

The Canon EOS Rebel T4i ( aka 650D ) Digital Camera is an ideal camera for any level photographer; combining both high quality imaging power and a wealth of functions that enable you to create beautiful imagery with ease. Video Snapshot
Video Snapshot is a unique mode that captures short video clips of 2, 4 or 8 seconds and automatically combines them into one file, giving you a highlights album that requires no post-production or further editing. Thus, the compiled video is ready for sharing online or displaying right on your HDTV via the camera's HDMI port. Plus, stills are recordable during video shooting simply by pressing the shutter button. In playback, video clips in an album are now capable of being reordered or deleted.
3.0" Vari-Angle Touch Screen Clear View LCD Monitor II
This 3.0" LCD monitor with multi-touch operation and touch AF has a high resolution of 1,040,000-dots for high-definition monitoring and playback of your imagery. It features an aspect ratio of 3:2. The LCD boasts a viewing angle of 170° (vertical / horizontal), and the vari-angle capabilities allow the screen to flip out to the side then tilt up and down for use at a variety of angles, including front-facing for use with self-portraits. The touch screen functionality gives an intuitive experience when using this camera and even allows you to modify your focus positioning based on touch alone. Two finger touch gestures (multi-touch) are usable for zooming or changing images, menu and quick control settings are accessible, and focus point and shutter release can be activated with the mere touch of your fingertip. Because of new, durable construction between the monitor's resin-coated cover and the LCD, reflections are reduced and the display is viewable, without glare, from any number of angles. The Clear View coating gives a great deal of clarity, even in bright sunlight, and is also smudge-resistant. The LCD features both auto and manual brightness control.

Hybrid CMOS AF
The Hybrid CMOS AF system allows for high speed focusing during shooting when using live view. Combining two distinct AF technologies--phase and contrast detection AF--the system enables faster and more precise autofocus. Multi Shot Noise Reduction
Multi shot noise reduction improves low-light shooting by essentially overlaying multiple, separate exposures on top of one another to build the image density and preserve detail. This mode effectively simulates high ISO performance without the increase of noise that goes along with it. It takes 4 consecutive shots, merges and aligns them, reducing more noise than the Rebel's traditional Noise Reduction filter, with little to no apparent loss of resolution. Lens Aberration Correction
An automatic corrective system can be employed in order to help reduce the effects of different lens aberrations. If there is light falloff detected towards the edges of the frame, the camera will automatically correct for this by evening out the exposure via the lens peripheral illumination correction feature. Additionally, a number of popular Canon lens' data is pre-programmed into the camera so it can quickly and automatically register settings according to the lens you are using. The T4i's chromatic aberration correction tool enables the correction of distracting color fringing at the time of shooting.
Feature Guide
A specific, helpful guide is integrated into the camera in order to help you learn about and determine which image settings to use in a given situation and how they affect your imagery. It is shown in each shooting mode, during mode dial operations, and for Quick Control screen functions, and appears automatically when a function is selected. This feature is enabled automatically, but can be disabled through the menu.
GPS Compatible
The Rebel T4i is compatible with the optional GP-E2 GPS receiver (not included). When connected to the hot shoe or through the accessory terminal, the receiver is capable of recording locational data, including latitude, longitude and altitude, to the metadata of your files for plotting to maps and reviewing your journey at home. You can even track the trajectory of movement with the receiver's logging function. An electric compass records the camera's orientation during every shot, and world time information is recorded via GPS syncing.

When it comes to choosing a camera there are so many different factors that need to be considered, the first is the type of camera you wish to go for, second is your budget, although the two pretty much go hand in hand. When looking for the best digital camera in 2013, which has been decided by their positive reviews, we can’t help notice that there are a few older models in the list. The reason for this is because some of them are still far better than many of the new models hitting the market.

Best DSLR cameras for 2013
First up we have the Canon EOS 6D, which we recently pitted against the 7D and Nikon D600. This is a full-frame camera that comes in a compact body, ideal for those who don’t wish to lug a beast around. PC Mag loves the fact that this is pretty cheap for its class and comes with some top-notch features, although this isn’t the fastest on the block and the GPS loves to drain the battery.

Tech Radar has given the Nikon D5100 four and a half out of five stars. They loved its high resolution and precise LCD display, the lack of control over the exposures can be a bit of a turn off. However, both novices and enthusiasts will love the D5100.

Best Superzoom cameras for 2013
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 has been voted very highly by PC Mag, and while this is a 2012 camera it still has more to offer than some of the new models coming out now. While the DMC-FZ200 has a lack-luster zoom ratio, the speedy performance and sharp lens more than makes up for this downfall.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V is getting on a little now, but the excellent photo quality and fast performance proves that there is life in the old dog yet. Best Compact cameras for 2013
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 has a huge sensor for such a compact camera, and you will be amazed at how close the images come to those taken with a more expensive DSLR. However, this is still a little pricey and does not have as much optical zoom as we would have hoped. PC Mag has a full review on this compact camera.

A review of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX150 sees this compact score an impressive four out of five stars. This camera is said to be very fast and the 10x optical zoom is pretty good considering its size. However, it seems that the 18-megapixel lens is a bit of an overkill and because there is not much weight to the camera it can become a little tough to keep steady while taking a photo.

It’s been tough keeping up with all the new camera announcements so far this year. One that I passed over initially but deserves attention is the new Fujifilm FinePix F900EXR – their latest top-of-the-line pocket superzoom camera. It’s got a large 1/2-inch 16-megapixel EXR II sensor, a 20x 25-500mm zoom lens, RAW shooting and P,A,S,M manual shooting modes making it the pocket superzoom for serious photographers. No problem if you’re not a manual shooter – Fujifilm’s EXR Auto mode has got you covered. The 1/2-inch sensor is the largest of any pocket superzoom and now has embedded phase detect pixels, which Fujifilm claims give it the world’s fastest auto focus. The big sensor, manual controls and RAW shooting have actually been standard on this camera for a couple of generations now. What’s new with the F900EXR is more speed, better auto focus and improved built-in Wi-Fi.

Speed is one of the main improvements in the F900EXR, according to Fujfilm. It uses a new EXR Processor II, which they say has double the performance of the previous processor. Some of the benefits are a startup time of just 1.1 seconds, a shot to shot time of 0.5 seconds, and super-fast burst rate of 11 FPS at full resolution (5 shot limit). The improved processing also allowed them to increase the video frame rate to 60 FPS at 1920 x 1080 full HD, and that means better video quality and the ability to do full HD slow motion video clips. Better processing should also mean better image quality – especially in low light where in-camera noise control plays an important role.

Embedding phase detect pixels on the sensor is a big deal – especially for a compact camera like this. In fact, correct me if I’m wrong but I think the Fujifilm FinePix F900EXR is the first pocket camera to get this kind of technology. Traditionally, phase detect auto focus was something you only got with an SLR, since the phase detect AF array was on the mirror. Phase detect auto focus is much better for moving subjects, which is one reason why the vast majority of sports photographers use DSLRs. But no mirror = no phase detect auto focus. Until now, that is. Putting phase detect pixels on the sensor is the latest thing for improving auto focus performance. Mostly, it’s been done with mirrorless camera, though. I believe Fujifilm is the first company to try it on non-interchangeable lens cameras. In early January they announced the X100S and X20 high-end compact cameras, both of which had phase detect pixels embedded on the sensor. The Intelligent Hybrid AF system in the F900EXR analyzes the scene and automatically switches between phase detect and contrast detect AF to deliver the best auto focus performance for the situation. I haven’t used it so I don’t know how well it works but I’m definitely excited about the possibilities – especially for action photography and video. I’ll keep my expectations low but I like where the new technology is headed and I look forward to testing the F900EXR hybrid auto focus.

Built-in Wi-Fi used to be pretty much a novelty in cameras. However, in the last year it’s become a very useful feature. Cameras now create their own Wi-Fi network so you don’t need a wireless access point to use the wireless features; and camera manufacturers have begun making their own mobile apps to take better advantage of built-in Wi-Fi functionality. With the F900EXR’s built-in Wi-Fi and the “Fujifilm Camera Application” installed in your phone or tablet (iOS or Android) you can wirelessly transfer photos and videos from the camera to your mobile device and then easily share to Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, etc. There’s also a “Fujifilm PC AutoSave” app that allows you to save photos and videos to your computer without a USB connection or card reader.

Pocket superzooms are my favorite kind of point-and-shoot camera because they allow me to carry the equivalent of a whole bag of lenses in my pants pocket (pocket superzoom camera guide). You do give up a bit of image quality compared to premium compact cameras with larger sensors and faster lenses. But I’m happy to make that trade to get the versatility of a 20x zoom lens, and the F900EXR’s 1/2-inch sensor is the best available in a pocket superzoom camera right now. Add RAW shooting and manual exposure controls and this camera is a winner for me. I also like Fujifilm’s EXR modes, which take advantage of their unique “three-sensors-in-one” EXR sensor design so you can choose to shoot for resolution, dynamic range or low light. The Fujifilm FinePix F900EXR has just been moved to the top of the list for my next P&S camera. It’s about time I tried one and I think I’ve convinced myself that the right way to do that is to just buy one – stay tuned for more.

The Fujifilm FinePix F900EXR will be available March, 2013 for US $399.95. If you don’t care about the built Wi-Fi, there’s also a slower, non-Wi-Fi version called the F850EXR, which will sell for $100 less.
